Educational Transitions and Pathways is a longitudinal and multi-cohort study of young Singaporeans. Through this study, we hope to better understand the behaviours, attitudes, aspirations, socio-educational experiences, outcomes and attainments of Singaporean adolescents and how they impact subsequent pathways to higher education and work, as well as their life course trajectories. Additionally, at a broader level, we also aim to understand the processes by which families and schools influence successful student outcomes, specifically, the differentiated pathways that students take (or the different destinations they arrive at despite similar origins or early life experiences), the life choices they make and remake over the course of their transitions from school to work life.

Research questions related to Pathways:
  • What types of pathways do students take after leaving secondary school? Have these pathways and transitions altered overtime and across successive cohorts? If so, how?
  • When and in what ways do students formulate plans for the future (e.g., higher education, career goals and general social life), how do they achieve them and what are key supporting or constraining factors?
  • What are key characteristics of successful school to work transitions across different cohorts of students? Specifically, what types of student experiences and life events affect positive and negative outcomes, and when do these occur?

This research project is funded by the Education Research Funding Programme (ERFP), National Institute of Education, Singapore (Project No. OER 06/21 MCCY; IRB: 2021-05-005-01)
